US HIV Patients Exceed 1.1 Million
JameJamOnline: The number of HIV positive patients in the US has exceeded 1.1 million as more people are infected with the AIDS-causing virus every year.
A report by UNAIDS, the United Nations agency that tracks the disease around the world, said that an estimated 1.2 million people were living with HIV in the US.
The new estimate published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is based on reports of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases from 40 states this year and also cases of AIDS from 10 states and the District of Columbia in 2006.
For years, authorities said 40,000 people were infected annually.
In fact, that number swung between 49,000 in the early '90s to 58,000 in the late '90s. Today, an estimated 55,000 people are infected each year, the report added.
A total of 65 million people have been infected with HIV virus since 1981 when epidemic AIDS spread throughout the world. Some 25 million patients have died so far of AIDS.
